Event narrative
Combined snow and sleet accumulations of 4 to 8 inches were common along with a tenth of an inch of ice (freezing rain) accumulation. These conditions led to hazardous driving across the area.
Wider weather episode
An arctic front slowly moved from northwest to southeast across northern NY during the late evening of February 17th and overnight hours of February 18th, bringing much colder air. Meanwhile, a weak surface wave was traveling northeast along this boundary. The combination allowed for light rain to change to freezing rain and eventually sleet and snow through the morning hours of February 18th.
Ice accumulations were generally around a tenth (0.10) of an inch with sleet/snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches that created hazardous travel.
