The zone started with Extreme(D3) drought in the far west and Severe(D2) drought for the remainder of the zone. By the end of January, the far east remained in Severe(D2) drought while the remainder was in Extreme(D3) drought. The Truth or Consequences Airport reported 0.09 inches of precipitation which was 0.36 inches below normal.
Wider weather episode
Another month where all sites reported below normal precipitation kept southwest New Mexico in Severe(D2) to Extreme(D3) drought.
