Snow developed across the North Carolina mountains during the afternoon of the 28th as a cold front swept through the area. Snow showers persisted through the early morning hours in the wake of the front near the Tennessee border as northwest winds pushed moisture up the western slopes of the Appalachians. By the time the snow tapered off around sunrise on the 29th, accumulations of 2 to 5 inches were widespread across the Tennessee border counties, from roughly I-40 northeast. Meanwhile, locations above 4000 feet or so reported amounts of up to a foot.
