At the US-2 Stateline DOT site (MTSTA), temperatures in the 20s below zero and breezy winds created intermittent periods of wind chills of -40 or worse during the early morning of January 1st. The peak wind chill of -42 was recorded from 2:54 AM to 3:05 AM.

The week-long arctic cold spell from the end of December 2021 spilled over into the first day of 2022, with continued well below zero temperatures and pockets of light winds, which created dangerously cold wind chill values for many northeast Montana locations.
