Ice Storm — Southern Craven, North Carolina
2022-01-21 to 2022-01-22 · Southern Craven, North Carolina
Event narrative
Light freezing rain during the day transitioned to a mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow during the evening and overnight before ending before daybreak. Amounts of snow and ice varied widely across the southern part of the county. Across the far northern part of the county, freezing rain amounts were low but still were enough to cause the Twin Span and Neuse River bridges in the New Bern area to close around 7pm due to icy conditions. Here a mix of sleet and snow produced around an inch of snow in New Bern and Trent Woods.
Farther south near Havelock, hardly any snow fell, with mostly freezing rain and some sleet mixing in throughout the night. Ice accretion of up to a half inch was observed across the Havelock area. Carteret-Craven Electric Coop reported trees and limbs on powerlines producing sporadic power outages.
Wider weather episode
A cold front moved through the area late in the day of January 20th. As the front moved through rain changed over to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain on the evening of January 20th through early morning on the 21st before ending. Significant amounts of ice fell toward the Crystal Coast, with a general 2 to 6 of snow mixed with sleet farther north and west. The icing amounts of a quarter to a half of an inch toward the Crystal Coast were the highest amounts of ice this area has experienced, over the widest area, since the late 1990s.
