2022-05-01 · near Batesburg, Saluda, South Carolina
Event narrative
Multiple social media posts with pictures of numerous golf ball to 2 in diameter hail along Hwy 378 near the Lexington/Saluda county line. Time estimated by radar.
Wider weather episode
A frontal boundary and associated mid-upper level shortwave forced a small area of scattered supercell-like convection across the Central Midlands. Deep dry air aloft and sufficient cloud layer shear produced an environment primarily conducive for hail, especially given the isolated storm mode. The scattered convection produced numerous hail reports including multiple significant hail reports up to 2.
