High Wind — Childress, Texas
2022-06-10 · Childress, Texas
Wider weather episode
On the afternoon of the ninth, scattered thunderstorms developed over the higher terrain of northeastern New Mexico and southeastern Colorado. This complex of thunderstorms moved southeastward across the Texas Panhandle becoming a broken line of storms by the time it reached the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. The cool outflow from this broken line of thunderstorms that surged through the southern Texas Panhandle provided strong to severe wind gusts. While the thunderstorms were departing the region early on the tenth, a couple of decaying storms produced heat bursts. The first was near Olton (Lamb County) where a Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet measured a wind gust of 61 mph along with a six Fahrenheit degree increase in temperature. At the same time, a heat burst near Childress (Childress County) caused considerable damage to a few structures. At 0045 CST on the tenth, a peak wind gust of 72 mph was measured by the Childress Municipal Airport Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS). Temperatures rapidly rose 11 Fahrenheit degrees with this wind gust along with a decrease in dew point and pressure.
