Drought — King, Texas
2022-06-01 · King, Texas
Wider weather episode
Significant improvements in long term drought conditions during the month of May were rolled back during June. A portion of Lubbock and Hockley Counties remained in moderate (D1) drought conditions from abundant rainfall through May. However, many areas that were previously in severe (D2) drought conditions degraded back in to extreme (D3) drought conditions.
Widespread precipitation events we saw during May came to an abrupt end in early June. Most areas saw zero to only 50 percent of normal precipitation. Rain that did fall during the month was hit and miss which is typical of summertime events. This has led to worsening conditions for most crop and rangelands across the region. Additionally, fuels have begun to dry again with ERC values once again exceeding the 90th percentile. However, with surface moisture remaining in place and light surface winds, the overfall fire weather threat was low.
