2022-04-01 · near Smithville, Mccurtain, Oklahoma
Wider weather episode
Widespread rainfall of two to in excess of three inches fell across the headwaters of the Mountain Fork River Basin across Southern Leflore and Northern McCurtain Counties in Southeast Oklahoma, as well as Western Polk County Arkansas during the morning hours of March 30th. High water routed downstream the Mountain Fork River on the 30th and 31st, and into the Smithville community during the early morning hours of April 1st. This resulted in flooding along the Mountain Fork River in Smithville, which is not measured in this location due to a lack of river gauges in this part of McCurtain County. However, high rushing water topped a bridge across the Mountain Fork River south of Smithville in the Narrows, where a 29 year old male attempted to cross the flooded bridge. His truck was swept downstream and was found a short distance later, but the lone male occupant was carried further downstream and was not found until April 7th when his body washed up along the banks of Panther Creek.
