Event narrative
A very hot and humid airmass settled into the region on the 11th with nearly a week of high temperatures close to 100 degrees and heat indicies approaching 120 at times. Lambert Field in St.Louis hit 100 degrees on the 12th, 101 on the 13th, and 99 on the 13th. A large majority of the heat-related deaths were in the St.Louis metro area with most victims elderly and living alone. Many were on upper floors when they died. Well over 200 people were treated for heat related illnesses as well. Outside of the St.Louis area, a 66-year-old man in Osage County died in his house when his air conditioner failed. A 76-year-old woman in Clark County also died when she turned off her air conditioner to save money. Two other Clark County residents also died when the temperature in their mobile home reached 120 degrees. Many roads through out the region also buckled from the extreme heat and crops withered with the dry weather. There was no widespread loss of livestock although dairy cows produced less milk, and cattle/swine/chickens put on less weight.
