Numerous strong to severe thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening across central South Dakota, in association with an area of low pressure and cold front in a hot and muggy environment. Large hail was the main hazard, with stones ranging from quarter to tennis ball size. A broken line of strong to severe thunderstorms then developed across northeastern South Dakota during the late evening, and these produced straight-line wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph.
