Numerous trees were downed by thunderstorm winds, with most of the damage occurring in the northern portion of the county.

Wider weather episode

A persistent hot and moist air mass allowed for high levels of instability in southwest Virginia. A cold front moving southeast through the region interacted with this unstable air mass and formed numerous severe thunderstorms which produced damaging winds.
