Event narrative

Around 60 trees were downed by thunderstorm winds throughout the county, with one falling onto a home on Virginia Highway 130. Thousands of people lost power in the area due to the damage.

Wider weather episode

A persistent hot and moist air mass allowed for high levels of instability in southwest Virginia. A cold front moving southeast through the region interacted with this unstable air mass and formed numerous severe thunderstorms which produced damaging winds.
