Wider weather episode
On August 9th and 10th, a quasi-stationary surface front meandered along the Ohio River, serving as a focus for the development of daytime showers and thunderstorms. Immediately south of the surface boundary, an unusually moist environment was present, with precipitable water values exceeding 2 inches across central Kentucky. As a result, as modest instability developed during the afternoon hours on the 9th, scattered showers and thunderstorms formed across Kentucky, with one cell growing strong enough to produce isolated wind damage across Trimble County. Then, on the afternoon of August 10th, widespread showers and thunderstorms once again developed across most of central Kentucky, with storms producing heavy rainfall amounts thanks to weak steering flow (slow storm motion) and the aforementioned available moisture. Flash flooding was observed during the afternoon hours across several locations, with the most significant flooding being observed in Franklin County and Casey County.
