Event narrative

Severe (D2) drought conditions persisted across all, but far southwestern portions of Blaine county in August. Across far southwestern portions of the county, drought conditions worsened from moderate (D1) to severe (D2) drought conditions by the end of August. The cooperative observer at Purdum reported 1.56 inches of precipitation in August. This was 1.26 inches below the normal of 2.82 inches.

Wider weather episode

Drought severity worsened across most of western and north central Nebraska in August. Severe (D2) drought conditions expanded to all of the central and eastern Sandhills by the end of the month. By the end of August, exceptional (D4) drought had developed over the large portion of southwestern Nebraska.
