Event narrative

Extreme (D3) drought conditions deteriorated to exceptional (D4) drought conditions by the end of August. The cooperative observer in Hayes Center recorded 1.42 inches of precipitation in August. This was 1.40 inches below the normal of 2.82 inches.

Wider weather episode

Drought severity worsened across most of western and north central Nebraska in August. Severe (D2) drought conditions expanded to all of the central and eastern Sandhills by the end of the month. By the end of August, exceptional (D4) drought had developed over the large portion of southwestern Nebraska.
