Drought — Eastern Interior, Puerto Rico

2022-09-01 to 2022-09-06 · Eastern Interior, Puerto Rico

Event narrative

The precursor of Hurricane Earl brought above normal rainfalls for the eastern half of Puerto Rico during the first few days of the month. These rains resulted in drought improvement below Severe Drought (D2) criteria. By the mid to latter part of the month, additional rainfalls, mainly due to Hurricane Fiona, resulted in the removal of all drought categories across the territory.

Wider weather episode

Above normal precipitation was finally received across Puerto Rico due to a combination of distant Hurricane Earl, a direct hit from Hurricane Fiona and a series of mid to upper-level troughs. As a result, the drought conditions abruptly ended in September.
