High Wind — Terry, Texas
2022-10-28 · Terry, Texas
Wider weather episode
A compact but strong upper level low pressure system dropped southeast across New Mexico on the 27th. Cold temperatures aloft and abundant low level moisture were able to create a modestly unstable environment within an atmosphere of strong wind shear. The combination of these features created strong thunderstorms on the afternoon and evening of the 27th. One of these storms produced ping ping ball size hail as it moved over Cee Vee (Cottle County). Lingering moderate rain showers early in the morning of the 28th generated a brief period of severe wind gusts near Brownfield (Terry County). A Texas Texas University West Texas mesonet site near Brownfield measured severe wind gusts from 0603 CST through 0607 CST with a peak gust of 65 mph.
