Wider weather episode
Low pressure moving eastward across Lake Superior during the day on the 16th and into the 17th led to northwesterly winds on the backside of the low across western Lake Superior. With colder air arriving behind the low and relatively warm surface water temperatures across western Lake Superior, heavy lake-effect snow developed late on the 16th and continued into the 17th before the low moved far enough away and the winds weakend, ending the lake-effect snow. Snowfall totals as high as 18 were reported along the Penokee Range in northern Iron County during this event.
