Event narrative
A period of moderate snow produced 3 to 5 inches of snow across Northumberland County during the morning and early afternoon of December 22, 2022. I-80 westbound was closed at Exit 215 in Turbot Township for nearly 3 hours due to a jack knifed tractor trailer and the resultant diesel fuel spill.
Wider weather episode
Precipitation overspread central Pennsylvania from south to north during the morning of December 22, 2022, as a result of a deepening area of low pressure over the Great Lakes combined with a coastal low forming over the Carolinas. The precipitation began as a burst of snow across the area. The snow quickly changed over to rain in the Lower Susquehanna Valley. However, the snow persisted across the central and northern mountains into the afternoon hours where a swath of 3 to 6 inches of snow was observed.
