Wider weather episode

A strong cold front brought high winds to central and north-central South Dakota during the afternoon and evening hours of October 12th. The high winds and low humidity combined to produce very high grassland fire danger in central, north-central, and northeastern South Dakota. In addition, the winds and harvest season caused poor air quality. Some of the highest wind gusts include 72 mph 10 miles south of Bullhead, 69 mph at Lees Corner and the Pierre Municipal Airport, and 66 mph at Trail City and Timber Lake.
