Air of arctic origin invaded Texas beginning in the early morning hours of the 22nd. The arrival of the frigid air was accompanied by strong and gusty north winds commonly sustained in the 25 to 35 mph range. The combination pushed wind chills well below zero, with many locations recording wind chill values as low as -15F to -30F degrees. The coldest readings were felt across the southwest Texas Panhandle. Isolated high winds were reported after the cold front moved through the area. Although some businesses around the region reported broken water pipes, widespread damage was not reported.
Maximum wind gusts were observed by the Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet:
61 mph at Childress (Childress County),
58 mph at Childress ASOS (Childress County), and
58 mph at Turkey (Hall County).
