Event narrative

MDT declared severe driving on US Highway 2 between Columbia Falls and Marias Pass as freezing rain led to extremely slick conditions.

Wider weather episode

A strong mid-level occluded front brought rain and freezing rain across northwest Montana. Roadways froze solid due to cold ground temperatures from arctic air leading up to the event. Rainfall ponded onto frozen roadways which led to severe driving conditions.
