2022-11-13 · Iron, Wisconsin
Event narrative
Lake-effect snowfall across the Iron County snowbelt was observed over a two-day period on the 12th and 13th. Total snowfall was 13.8 inches in Gile with about 7.5 falling in an 8-hour period the morning of the 13th.
Wider weather episode
As a Colorado low lifted to the northeast on the 11th into the 12th, high pressure built across the Central and Northern Plains. This set up a tight pressure gradient over western Lake Superior and generated strong northerly winds that ushered in cooler air. With Lake Superior water temperatures still in the 40s, this generated a long duration lake-effect snow event over parts of northwestern Wisconsin. The primary area where snow was received was the snowbelt over northern Iron County. By the time the event ended after about 48 hours, snowfall totals nearing 14 inches were reported in Gile.
