Wider weather episode
A storm system and cold front brought light to moderate snowfall across portions of central Missouri, with light snow as far south as the Highway 60 corridor. A band of precipitation with some convective elements moved into portions of central and west central Missouri during the early morning hours of January 12th. Some of the convective elements briefly had sleet with them throughout the morning hours, with precipitation changing over to all snow within about 30 minutes to 2 hours after precipitation onset. Some thunder occurred with the snow in the Lake of the Ozarks region during the early morning hours. As a result, the highest snowfall amounts and rates occurred over central Missouri, with the snow band weakening as it dove southeast across the area during the morning. Precipitation came to an end as flurries and light rain over south central Missouri by early afternoon on January 12th.
Snowfall amounts generally ranged from 3 to 5 inches across central Missouri and the Lake Ozarks region to as little as 0.5 inches along and just south of the Interstate 44 and Highway 60 corridors across southwestern Missouri. Roads north of Interstate 44, and especially towards the Highway 54 corridor and across the Lake of the Ozarks region, became mostly to completely snow covered during the morning, with partly covered roadways farther south into the Springfield metropolitan area during the morning rush hour into late morning. Multiple slide offs and accidents were reported. About one dozen schools closed for the day, all of which were located across central Missouri.
