A strong pressure gradient developed over eastern Oklahoma during the afternoon and evening of the 6th, in response to deepening low pressure over the High Plains to the west with the approach of an upper level disturbance. Downdrafts associated with weak rain showers, which developed north of strong to severe thunderstorms across southeastern Oklahoma, were able to enhance the already strong gradient wind near the ground. The Oklahoma Mesonet station near Okemah measured 58 mph wind gusts.
