Heavy Snow — Campbell, South Dakota

2023-03-01 · Campbell, South Dakota

Event narrative

Eight inches of snow was observed in Pollock.

Wider weather episode

A weak area of low pressure tracked from west central South Dakota on the afternoon of February 28th to southwestern Minnesota by the late morning of March 1st. It produced periods of snow on the 28th and then a shield of snowfall along with more localized bands of heavier snows from north central and northeastern South Dakota into North Dakota and Minnesota through the morning of March 1st. Snowfall totals ranged from 2 to 9 inches. The highest reports include 9 inches 8 miles northwest of Leola and 2 miles south-southwest of McLaughlin, 8.1 inches 2 miles southeast of the Waubay National Wildlife Refuge, and 8 inches in Pollock.

In addition to the snow, strong wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph led to significantly reduced visibility at times. The South Dakota Department of Transportation issued a No Travel Advisory across several counties as a result. Slick and snow-covered roads also contributed to several vehicle and semi truck accidents.
