Event narrative

After a dry January and February, below normal rainfall continued over Hendry County in March. These prolonged dry conditions led to the designation of severe drought (D2) by the U.S. Drought Monitor, and eventually worsened to extreme drought (D3) on March 28th. A burn ban was implemented for Hendry County effective March 8th.

Wider weather episode

Prolonged periods of dry weather across much of South Florida during the winter months led to the development of severe to extreme drought conditions during the month of March.
