Winter Weather — Avery, North Carolina

2023-03-12 to 2023-03-14 · Avery, North Carolina

Wider weather episode

Precipitation associated with a complex low pressure system overspread the North Carolina mountains during the early morning of the 12th. Temperatures were cold enough for the precip to fall as freezing rain in some areas, especially across Avery County. While ice accretion was generally light and confined to elevated surfaces, some high elevation locations saw up to 1/4 inch. After a brief lull in the precipitation later on the 12th and into the early part of the 13th, increasing northwest winds in the wake of a cold front lifting moisture up the western slopes of the Appalachians resulted in snow shower development off and on throughout the 13th and 14th. This resulted in up to 3 inches of snow accumulation, mainly above about 3500 feet.
