The observer at Bergland Dam measured nearly five inches of wet, heavy snow during the early morning of the 1st. Schools were closed throughout the county on the morning of the 1st due to hazardous travel on snow-packed and slippery roadways.

Wider weather episode

A combination of Gulf and Atlantic moisture being drawn into a deepening low pressure system over the Upper Great Lakes resulted in record calendar day snowfall totals for May over portions of west and north central Upper Michigan on the 1st and 2nd.
