An advancing cold front along the Ohio and Tennessee valleys combined with a Piedmont trough over western North Carolina and a very moist atmosphere to produce widely isolated to scattered thunderstorms. A swath of severe thunderstorms developed over the northern Coastal Plain in Halifax County, producing damaging straight-line winds and downed trees.
