An upper ridge was over most of the southern half of the country. A weak upper level disturbance was moving across northern Nebraska. A weak surface low pressure was across far north central Kansas during the afternoon hours. Effective bulk shear values were generally around 30 knots, and most unstable CAPE was generally 3,000 to 5,000 J/kg. Temperatures were in the triple digits, and dewpoints were in the mid to upper 60s.
Storms developed and moved across north central Kansas during the late afternoon and early evening hours of July 28th. A storm developed over Jewell County and produced two inch hail after 5:30 PM CDT. Another storm strengthened over Mitchell County and produced one inch hail which resulted in crop damage at 6 PM CDT. This storm weakened and another storm produced one inch hail which also resulted in crop damage in the same county after 6:30 PM CDT.
