Thunderstorms developed over western North Dakota in an environment with strong deep layer shear and elevated instability. Some of these storms became severe, producing large hail and strong wind gusts. The largest hail reported was the size of a golf ball, which occurred near Oakdale and near Twin Buttes, both in Dunn County. The strongest wind gust reported was 79 mph at the Grassy Butte NDAWN station in McKenzie County.
