Wider weather episode
Thunderstorms developed during the afternoon and evening hours of the 16th across northwest Wisconsin ahead of a cold front. Daytime heating led to strong instability over the region and a strong low level jet provided ample wind shear for storms to work with. With the cold front, the storms were generally linear in mode resulting in damaging winds being the primary threat as they moved to the east. Numerous reports of tree damage were received from across northwest Wisconsin into the evening hours along with a few hail reports. The largest hail report was half dollar-sized.
