Event narrative

Dense fog was observed throughout the Animas River Basin, including at the Durango - La Plata County Airport where visibility was reduced to less than one quarter of a mile for several hours. Various Colorado Department of Transportation Webcams along the US Highway 160 corridor also showed areas of dense fog in the zone.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system earlier in the week brough widespread rain and snow to the valleys of southwest Colorado. In the wake of this system, clearing skies and colder temperatures combined with the moisture provided by the recent precipitation to create dense fog in the area.
