Event narrative

A band of heavy snow got into the far southern portion of Nassau County. The zone was on the far northern edge of the moderate to heavy snow band. However, most of the zone fell short of warning criteria from a coverage perspective. This is based on reports and radar reflectivity returns. Trained spotters reported 5.0 inches in Island Park to the south, and 2.7 inches in Syosset to the north. An NWS employee reported 3.0 inches in East Meadow up towards the northern part of the zone. Broadcast media reported 5.0 inches in Rockville Centre, with the general public reporting 6.0 inches in Bellmore. A public report from Bethpage came in at 3.0 inches and 3.1 inches in Manhasset Hills. Most places received 3 to 5 inches of snow north of the Southern State, with amounts closer to 5 and 6 inches right along the immediate south shore towards the beaches.

Wider weather episode

A mid level disturbance associated with a confluent upper level trough lead to strong mid level frontogenesis that developed a band of snow to the north of developing low pressure moving offshore. Southwestern portions of the area were on the northern edge of a narrow band of heavy snow that resulted in some southwestern zones reaching warning criteria. Amounts were considerably less to the north.
