An upper level storm system moved from the Central United States into the eastern United States through January 9. At the surface, a warm front with a trailing area of low pressure, lifted north through western North Carolina during the morning into the early afternoon hours. North of this front, precipitation initially fell as freezing rain and/or sleet resulting in light ice accumulations across the North Carolina mountains.
