Event narrative

A winter storm moving into Schuylkill County on the late evening hours of February 12 and into the morning hours of February 13, 2024 brought a brief period of initial rain before producing 8 to 10 inches of snowfall, with higher elevations receiving up to 12 inches of snow. A section of south-bound Interstate 81 closed due to motor vehicle accidents throughout the duration of the event. The heavy snowfall, coupled with gusty winds throughout the day on February 13th, caused widespread power and communication outages due to trees and power lines snapping. Multiple townships declared a Declaration of Disaster Emergency with warming centers opening up throughout the county.

Wider weather episode

A quick-moving area of low pressure pushed from the Lower Ohio Valley across the central Appalachians and off the Delmarva Coast from the evening of February 12 into the morning of February 13, 2024. This system pushed rain into Pennsylvania that quickly changed over to wet snow from north to south. The swath of heaviest snowfall extended from the middle Susquehanna Valley eastward into the Poconos, where 7 to 12 inches of snow fell.
