Event narrative

Multiple power outages were observed near Grundy caused by tree damage.

Wider weather episode

In a series of strong low pressure disturbances, a system that pressed into the Great Lakes region on January set forth a multi-day wind event in southwest Virginia. Surface wind gusts grew in strength starting on the afternoon of January 12th and would remain breezy to strong until the morning on the 14th, once the system departed into New England. During the time when gusts on the order of 30 to 35 miles per hour were common, both Buchanan and Dickenson Counties observed widespread power outages as the result of tree and power line damage.
