Event narrative

Snow amounts of 2 to 5 inches fell across the county. Measured amounts include 2.9 inches from the NWS Cooperative Observer from Ionia, 2.0 inches from the NWS Cooperative Observer from four miles south of Burr Oak, and 2.0 inches from a CoCoRaHS observer located seven miles north of Beloit.

Wider weather episode

An upper level trough moved from over the Rocky Mountains to the Central Plains to the Midwest. Shortwave troughs associated with the upper trough moved over Nebraska and Kansas. An Arctic cold front began moving across north central Kansas during the morning and afternoon hours of January 11th. Snow started to develop and move across the area during the afternoon and early evening hours of January 11th. The snow gradually ended from west to east beginning the morning of January 12th and continued into the afternoon hours. Total snowfall amounts ranged mainly from 1-5 inches. Mitchell, Jewell, and Smith Counties received the most snowfall with amounts ranging from 2 to 5 inches. There were road closures and school and activity cancellations.
