Wider weather episode
Scattered thunderstorms developed across parts of East Texas in the early afternoon on January 8th, mainly along and north of a surface warm front oriented across Southeast Texas. Near and south of the front, surface dew points rose into the mid and upper 60s, with MLCAPE values of 2000-3000 J/kg. Wind profiles near the warm front showed very strong low-level vertical shear. Thunderstorms were initially elevated through the mid-morning hours with primarily a large hail threat, but daytime heating began to aid in additional convective development along the warm front by late morning into the early afternoon. This led to the development of surface-based thunderstorms with increasing potential for some damaging wind gusts, and one such storm produced very isolated wind damage in Sabine County Texas.
