Winter Storm — Uinta, Wyoming
2024-03-01 to 2024-03-03 · Uinta, Wyoming
Event narrative
The Evanston-Uinta County Airport - Burns Field ASOS measured the first wind gust exceeding high wind criteria, with an initial high wind gust of 59 mph at 2:20 am MST 3/1. This ASOS also measured a peak wind gust of 66 mph at 5:26 pm MST 3/1 (and at other times as well), and a final high wind gust of 59 mph at 12:53 pm MST 3/2. While widespread warning criteria snow amounts were not reported, strong post-frontal wind gusts continued through 3/3 coinciding with periods of moderate to heavy snow with visibility below 0.25 SM at times. Additionally, derived analyses indicates a potential that warning criteria snowfall amounts occurred across portions of the north slopes of the Uinta Mountains, as well as east of SR-150 and south of I-80.
Wider weather episode
A strong system approached the region for the start of March, with anomalously strong low level flow noted ahead of a cold frontal boundary. This strong low level flow resulted in a prolonged period of strong sustained and gusty winds across southwest Wyoming, coinciding with accumulating snowfall along and behind the cold frontal boundary.
