Event narrative

The Sierra Blanca ASOS observed a peak wind gust of 60 mph. The station also observed high sustained winds peaking at 49 mph during the time period.

Wider weather episode

Strong southwest winds ahead of a weakening Pacific upper low moved over New Mexico during the day Easter Sunday. Deep boundary layer mixing across the highlands and plains of eastern New Mexico allowed these strong winds aloft to mix down to the surface resulting in high sustained winds above 40 mph and gusts as high as 65 mph. Roswell observed a high wind gust of 63 mph resulting in blowing dust that reduced visibility to 6 miles. Winds tapered off just after sunset as the boundary layer decoupled.

Keywords: High Wind.
