Wider weather episode

An early spring storm system came through the region in several pieces, bringing a wide variety of weather to the area. Rain and snow developed initially with the first part of the system early on the 24th, with some freezing rain and a wintry mix across far southwest into south-central South Dakota. Snow was heaviest initially from the northern Black Hills area to northwest South Dakota, with heavier snow developing elsewhere to the southeast later on the 24th into the 25th. Gusty winds developed on the back side of the system across the western into central South Dakota plains, producing areas of blowing snow, with near blizzard conditions for a period on the 25th across far south-central South Dakota. The highest snowfall totals were generally from the Spearfish to Sturgis areas, and also across parts of northwest into central South Dakota, where 5 to 10 inches was mostly reported. Elsewhere across the northern Black Hills area and the west central South Dakota plains, amounts of 2 to 6 inches were reported in most areas.
