Heavy Snow — Spink, South Dakota

2024-03-24 to 2024-03-26 · Spink, South Dakota

Wider weather episode

A broad area of low pressure deepened as it drifted between eastern Nebraska, Iowa and then into Wisconsin before then moving east. This system spread moisture across central and northeast South Dakota, initially as a rain snow mix before transitioning to accumulating snowfall. Multi-day accumulations topped out at 9 inches in Milbank, 8.5 inches in La Bolt, 8 inches in Pickerel Lake, while Murdo came in at 6.1 inches. In addition to the snowfall, winds peaked between 40 and 50 mph with a peak gust of 53 mph at the Department of Transportation weather stations in Macs Corner and Lake City. The combination of high winds, snow and ice resulted in hazardous travel conditions, with multiple slide-ins and jackknifed semis along Interstate 29 and 90 as well as highways 12 and 14.
