Winter Storm — Southern Somerset, Maine

2024-03-20 to 2024-03-21 · Southern Somerset, Maine

Event narrative

Precipitation began as light rain or a mix of rain and snow very late on the 20th, but quickly changed to moderate snowfall. In a rarity, gusty west southwest winds did to prevent precipitation from remaining snow through the overnight into the 21st. A locally heavy band of snow wrapped around the northwest side of a quickly developing secondary low pressure and parts of the lower Kennebec River Valley saw more than 6 inches of snow. Snowfall totals ranged from 6 to 9 inches, with locally higher amounts.

Wider weather episode

A warm front lifted into northern New England with light to moderate snow. Temperatures began mild, but despite southwesterly to westerly winds they were able to cool as precipitation fell and even locations that began as rain changed to snow. Snowfall was generally moderate through the mountains, but secondary low pressure formed on the occluded front as the system moved into Downeast Maine and a short lived but heavy band of snow developed. This impacted parts of the Kennebec River Valley with locally heavy snowfall totals.
