2024-04-15 to 2024-04-16 · Spink, South Dakota
Wider weather episode
Low pressure south of the region, and high pressure to the east helped generate strong east winds across north central South Dakota during the afternoon of April 15th, with a slight lull in the late evening and early overnight hours, before a period of stronger winds developed during the early morning hours of April 16th. Peak winds during the day included gusts of 60 mph 4 miles east southeast of Akaska, and 59 mph 5 miles southwest of Java. During the early morning hours, winds peaked at 77 mph 9 miles south southeast of Spink Colony and 73 mph 7 miles south of Claremont. This second round of strong winds, generally between 60 and 70 mph, were mainly confined to the James valley, though sporadic gusts in excess of 58 mph were noted in north central and central South Dakota during that time as well. The strongest winds were also responsible for some tree and outbuilding damage in Ferney, as well as tree damage in and around Aberdeen.
