Event narrative

A few power lines were blown down by high winds in the City of Roanoke, leading to almost 1000 customers losing power. A gust of 61 MPH was measured at the Roanoke ASOS. These high winds downed power lines off Plantation Road and Tacoma Avenue; downed power lines off 11th street; and downed power lines near the intersection of Belford Street and Westchester Avenue.

Wider weather episode

A strong cold front passed across southwest Virginia in the late afternoon on February 28. Strong gusty winds in the wake of the front caused damage to power lines and trees, resulting in scattered power outages in the region.
