2024-02-02 to 2024-02-04 · Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
Event narrative
A public report of 9 inches total snowfall was received shortly before 5 PM AKST 2/4 near Nikiski. Numerous other reports ranging from 6 to 9 inches of new snowfall were received across the rest of the western Kenai Peninsula between 2/3 and 2/4.
Wider weather episode
A low pressure and frontal system moved up from Kodiak Island into the Kenai Peninsula early in February, producing several inches of snow across much of the Kenai Peninsula and up across the Anchorage area. Temperatures in place ahead of this system were seasonably cold, allowing for very high snow to liquid water ratios and fluffy snow to quickly accumulate. Gusty northerly winds also lead to localized areas of reduced visibility in blowing/drifting snow from Anchorage to the western Kenai Peninsula.
