Wider weather episode
A shortwave trough moved from southern California towards New Mexico on May 20th. This shortwave resulted in an increase in mid-level winds and mid-level moisture across western, northern and parts of central New Mexico. The increase in mid-level moisture along with daytime heating resulted in virga showers along the Pacific cold front during the mid afternoon to late evening hours. Some of these virga showers allowed these stronger mid-level winds to mix down to the surface resulting in high wind gusts at the Farmington Four Corners Regional Airport and Raton Municipal Airport. Winds decreased and virga showers dissipated during the overnight hours.
